Science, technology and public value.

XTF is interested in work that starts with a meaningful question, uses technology with purpose and makes its reasoning open to examination.

A field does not make a project valuable. Its question, method and consequences do.

How we think about focus.

The areas below are a map, not a checklist. Work may move between disciplines, combine physical and digital systems or create a new category entirely.

Across every field, XTF looks for a clear problem context, a credible method, responsible testing, honest limits and a reason the work should exist beyond its maker.

The examples describe possible questions, not confirmed program themes or automatic eligibility. Every active program publishes its own scope and terms.

01 / Focus areas

Different fields. A shared standard.

Each area can support research, prototypes, tools, systems or public work when the question and method justify the technology.

AI

AI & digital systems

Responsible systems, accessible tools, careful data practices and technology designed around human needs. Illustrative questions may involve human oversight, privacy, explainability, language access or tools that extend rather than remove human agency.

CE

Climate & energy

Evidence-led approaches to resilience, efficiency, adaptation and sustainable infrastructure. Work should explain the conditions being measured, the trade-offs involved and how a proposed intervention could be tested.

RH

Robotics & hardware

Physical systems that make a measurable task safer, clearer, more efficient or more possible. Questions may involve sensing, assistive devices, human-machine interaction, fabrication or responsible automation.

HB

Health & biotechnology

Careful investigation where safety, evidence, consent and ethics remain central. An early project must distinguish exploratory work from established findings and avoid claims its method cannot support.

PT

Public-interest technology

Tools and research that improve access, rights, civic life, education and shared capacity. Useful work begins by understanding the people and institutions already connected to the problem.

CT

Creative technology

Interfaces, experiences and media that help people understand, imagine or participate. The technology should strengthen the idea, not distract from whether the experience is meaningful or accessible.

Technology is not the argument.

A project must explain what problem it addresses, what existing work it has learned from and what evidence would count as progress.

Who experiences the problem, what shapes it and why is further work useful?

What will be observed, tested or compared—and what result could change the conclusion?

What risks, exclusions, safety questions, environmental costs or unintended consequences need attention?

Who can use the result, learn from it or carry the work forward?

Ask who the work is for—and what it changes.

Public value is considered through the purpose, process and consequences of a project, not simply through the name of its field.

Access

Can people reach it?

Consider cost, language, ability, technical access and the barriers built into the surrounding system.

Agency

Can people understand and choose?

Design for meaningful control, informed participation and clarity about what the technology does.

Safety

Can it be tested responsibly?

Identify possible harm, appropriate boundaries and the protection needed before any real-world use.

Learning

Can others examine the method?

Make sources, decisions, uncertainty and relevant materials visible enough to question.

Durability

What would continuation require?

Look beyond the demonstration to maintenance, adoption, resources and responsible stewardship.

Limits

What should not be claimed?

State the difference between a concept, an experiment, a prototype and an established result.

The question comes before the category.

A strong project may fit more than one focus area. Programs publish their specific scope, eligibility and review criteria before applications open.

The category does not decide the answer.

These answers explain the institutional approach. A confirmed program call may define a narrower focus.

Can a project span several areas?

Yes. A project can combine disciplines when the connection is necessary to the question and the team can explain how each part will be investigated.

Does a listed field guarantee eligibility?

No. The focus areas describe institutional interests. Eligibility, geography, age, stage and program scope are stated only in a confirmed call.

Does XTF require a finished prototype?

Not as a general rule. Different programs may begin with a question, research, an early experiment or an existing prototype. The program page will state the required stage.

What matters more than novelty?

A meaningful problem, a credible method, responsible testing, evidence proportionate to the claim and a useful next step.

How are health or sensitive-data projects handled?

Any confirmed program involving sensitive work must publish appropriate safety, privacy, consent and safeguarding terms before participation.
